Irigarea aduce bunăstarea

Irrigation systems will be inaugurated ahead of schedule

Prime Minister Chiril Gaburici chaired today the meeting of the Steering Committee of the Millennium Challenge Account Moldova (MCA Moldova) that focused on the progress in U.S Government’s Compact implementation. According to the reports, if the construction works continue at an increased pace, at least three irrigation systems rehabilitated with the Compact support will be put into operation two months ahead of schedule.
According to Valentina Badrajan, the executive director of MCA Moldova, the construction companies will complete the rehabilitation of Puhaceni and Roscani irrigation systems in the Anenii Noi rayon and Jora de Jos system in the Orhei rayon in May-June, in spite of earlier expectations to complete the works in July. The rehabilitation of eight irrigation systems runs at an increased pace, while the small weather-caused delays have been addressed. The Cosnita, Blindesti, Grozesti, Leova, and Chircani-Zirnesti systems will be inaugurated this August. On the other hand, Mrs. Badrajan added that the farmers from Criuleni and Lopatna can already use the systems that were put into operation last year.
To make sure that the rehabilitated irrigation systems will be operational, in the upcoming months the Compact will procure maintenance equipment for the rehabilitated irrigation systems and deliver training to Water Users’ Associations that will manage the rehabilitated systems.
The Sarateni-Soroca road segment rehabilitated with the Compact support was extended from 92.5 km to 95.5 km, while the local roads were extended to 32.2 km. All the potential construction defects will have been removed by September 2015.
At the end of the meeting the Steering Committee approved the report on the actions taken by MCA Moldova to prevent potential fraud and corruption cases during the Compact implementation.
Prime Minister Gaburici highly appreciated the Compact results and the professionalism of the MCA Moldova team. „We expect a more intense cooperation with the U.S. Government through the Compact. The Government of Moldova is determined to make efforts to gain the trust of its foreign partners”, Prime Minister added.

Note: The MCA Moldova’s Steering Committee, made of representatives of the Government, civil society and private sector, coordinates the implementation of the U.S. Government’s USD 262 mil. 5-year Compact that aims to increase the incomes of the Moldovan people, investing in the rehabilitation of roads and irrigation systems and fostering the transition to high value agriculture.
